Guide for Use
 1. Principles for Use
The Division of Animal Resources and Development shall be available for use only to the following people:
  • Staff and students of this university
  • People permitted by the director of the Life Science Research Center to use the facility.

 2. User Registration
  • Those who wish to use the facility shall apply for registration to the facility director of the Division of Animal Resources and Development and receive a user card (card key).
  • The facility director may make it the duty of applicants to receive seminars.

 3. Going In and Out of the Facility
  • Users must use the front entrance for going in and out of the facility.
  • The user card is required for going in and out of the facility. (Be sure to use your own user card.)
  • At the entrance and animal receiving dock, take off your shoes and wear the facility's indoor shoes kept in the shoe cupboard.
  • Unregistered people (such as visitors and contractors) must fill out the user register book at the reception counter.
  • Keep outer garments in the locker at the entrance and clean your hands with the automatic hand sterilizer.
  • Change to the facility's white frock in the dressing room, animal room, and treatment room.
  • When you leave the facility, follow this procedure in reverse order.

 4. Application for Keeping Animals
  • To keep animals in the facility, fill out the application form and submit it at the reception counter for the facility director's permission seven or more days before the day you wish to have the animals brought in.
  • After receiving permission from the facility director, request the procurement team in the management group to make the purchase.
  • The facility shall notify the users of the date the animals are brought in and the date of completing the inspection.
  • Any modification of the initial application shall require an additional application and permission from the facility director.
  • Extending the period of use and increasing the number of cages due to breeding shall require an additional application and permission.
  • Keeping genetically modified animals requires an application for genetically modified animals and permission from the facility director.

 5. Bringing in Animals
  • In principle, animals can be brought into the facility only during the following times on the following days of the week:
Animal Species Day of the Week Time
Mouse, Rat, Hamster, and Guinea Pig Tuesday and Friday Before noon
Rabbit Tuesday and Thursday Before noon
Dog, Cat, Monkey, and Chicken Monday to Friday 9:00 - 16:00

 6. Incoming Inspection and Quarantine Inspection of Animals
  • Animals brought into the facility shall receive incoming and quarantine inspections at the facility.
  • Even during the incoming inspection or after entry to the facility, the facility may take appropriate measures concerning animals judged as being inappropriate or having a risk of affecting the surroundings after consultations with the users.
  • In the case of finding an animal that has died of an unknown cause or an animal suspected of carrying an infectious disease, please promptly report it to the facility office.
  • With regard to the incoming and quarantine inspection fees, please inquire at the facility office.

 7. Placement of Animals
  • Animals shall be placed in the animal room by the facility staff.
  • Users shall not move the cages or come into contact with animals other than their own without permission.

 8. Moving Animals Out and Bringing Them Back
  • To move an animal out, fill out the user register book.
  • If the number of cages is reduced by moving animals out, return animal labels to the prescribed case.
  • Animals moved out of the facility are generally not allowed to be brought back in. (If it is required for experimentation, please consult the facility office.)

 9. Feeds and Bedding
  • In principle, animals' feeds and bedding shall be supplied by the facility except for in the case of special feeds. Users may use the feeds in the Feed Warehouse on the third floor and the beddings in the chip chamber on the first floor by filling out the user register books there.

 10. Rearing Equipment and Devices
  • The facility shall clean, disinfect, and sterilize all equipment and devices required for keeping the animals.
  • It is prohibited to take the rearing equipment and devices out.

 11. Sharing the Rearing Management
  • In the case of using the animal experimentation laboratory, genetically modified animal room, long-term laboratory, transgenic animal preservation room, metabolism laboratory, or aquatic animal room, the users shall conduct the rearing management.

 12. Putting Down Animals
  • With regard to animals that become unnecessary after completing the experimentation, put them down painlessly.
  • To put down large numbers of rabbits, rats, and mice, use the CO2 in the utility room on the first floor.
  • Please contact the facility office with any question.

 13. Disposal of Dead Bodies
  • The users must put the animals' dead bodies into the plastic bags kept in the corridors on all floors and in the treatment room, seal up the bags, and then store them in the freezer in the utility room on the first floor.
  • When you store the dead bodies, measure their weight, fill out the prescribed form, and then paste it on the plastic bag.

 14. Disposal of Excrement and Dirt
  • Put excrement and dirt produced during animal breeding, experiments, and treatment into the container kept in the room.
  • Put used injection and surgical needles into the special plastic containers kept in the treatment and operating rooms.

 15. Restrictions or Prohibitions Regarding the Use of the Facility
  • The director of the facility or Life Science Research Center shall warn and may restrict or prohibit the use of the facility to users who fail to comply with the instructions for use and cause troubles for other people.
